Adult Ballet student Destinee in our Beginners Masterclass, Oct 2021

This class is perfect for adults who have never danced or tried ballet before but are ready to take their first steps. You’ll learn the foundations of classical ballet, focusing on basic positions, alignment, and simple movements at the barre and in the centre.

This is a class designed to build confidence, and help you feel prepared to join a drop-in adult beginner ballet class. We understand that your first ever class can feel daunting, so this is an ideal environment if you prefer to learn alongside others with little to no experience. We value detailed, focused instruction to help you develop a strong foundation in ballet vocabulary while enjoying ballet in a supportive environment.

All of our classes can be attended on a termly basis (10 - 12 weeks), or you can attend on a drop-in basis.

FAQS

  • No prior dance or movement experience is needed. This class is designed specifically for complete beginners who are starting from scratch. This class aims to develop your body awareness, coordination, musicality and knowledge of ballet terminology to support you in your ballet journey

  • You don’t need to buy specialist ballet clothing for your first class. Comfortable exercise wear that allows you to move freely is ideal. Ballet shoes are recommended, but socks can be worn if you don’t have them yet. If you do choose to continue with this class, we encourage you to buy soft ballet shoes

  • You can take your first class in socks if you are just trying out ballet. If you choose to continue with it, we recommend visiting Bloch or Capezio in Covent Garden to purchase soft, split-sole ballet shoes. Purchasing in person ensures the best fit, therefore, we generally don’t recommend buying shoes online as sizing can vary.

  • This class is specifically for absolute beginners, and the pacing and structure of the lesson will assume no prior dance or ballet experience. This means we will explain everything in detail, offer a lot of guidance and opportunity for repetition. We never know who will sign-up, but given the class name and description, we anticipate everyone will be at a similar starting point.

  • It’s absolutely normal to feel a little nervous about starting something new. This class is a relaxed and supportive environment designed to help you feel comfortable and confident as you begin your ballet journey. Our school is committed to being an inclusive and welcoming space, and our teachers embody and reflect this ethos. If you feel you need to take a little break or opt out of certain exercises, that is completely fine. Most of the students in this class will also be brand new to ballet, so it’s a great place to make friends.

  • No, flexibility is not a requirement to start ballet. Over time, the movements and exercises in class can help improve your flexibility and active range of motion, but you don’t need to be flexible to start. You might be surprised by your progress within just a few weeks or months of consistent practice.

  • This depends on your individual progress and comfort level. Many students feel ready to try one of our drop-in beginner ballet class after a few weeks or a few months, but everyone is welcome to continue in this class for as long as they like. It is also an option to take this class alongside a beginner ballet class, so you can couple the attention to detail offered in this class, with a class with a little more pace and challenge.
