🎉 Follow Along Friday 🎉 Today’s feature is a peak behind the scenes at our Improver level ballet class with @gioh_lamboglia - thank you to our students for demonstrating this exercise so well! Contact us if you want to know more about the level :) ✨FRAPPÉ TIPS✨ Quick, sharp, and a little tricky – frappés are all about clarity, control, and precision. They train rhythm and speed which is especially important as you progress to Intermediate and beyond! Whether you’re new to them or refining your technique, here are some ways to approach frappés at the barre: ⚡️ Start from stillness – Before each strike, pause. Feel the connection of your foot to your supporting leg and your energy coiled and ready to release! An accurate foot position also enhances engagement of your turnout muscles! 🌬 Exhale on the strike – Use your breath to energise the movement. A quick, intentional exhale can help coordinate the sharpness of the working foot with the stillness of the standing leg. 🦶 Brush, don’t kick – Think of brushing the floor like a lightning strike. Keep it clean and deliberate. Yes - you should move with power, but not so much that you distort your alignment or twist in the pelvis. 🧱 Standing leg = your foundation – as with everything, don’t forget the supporting side! Stay lifted and grounded through the standing hip and inner thigh to avoid collapsing or rocking. 🎵 Match the music – Frappés are rhythmical! Use the beat to find consistency and snappiness - as our students are training and demonstrating so well here, this is not about an even movement, the emphasis is on the outward strike and hold - we return fast so we sharply strike back out! She is our resident Variations and Pointe teacher and also leads our Absolute Beginners Level 2 classes. Our signature Variation classes were the very first offering at LBC and key to our mission — they were created to inspire adult students to explore classical repertoire in a supportive and uplifting way. When we met Tori we knew she would be the perfect person to lead them! Learning Folly Variation behind the scenes 👀 Featuring Silvia, Salomé, Beth and Laura in class with @torimartin__ Our final week with Folly is this Sunday and its performance week! (Solos/small groups - performing is optional). Then we start learning something from Giselle which I feel is very timely for October 🤣 📸 by @sharon.yau 💕

✨ Learn a combination from our Improvers Technique class ✨ This clip shows @gioh_lamboglia guiding dancers through a simple adage in the centre — introducing use of basic alignments, sustained extensions, and control. At this level, each centre exercise is first explained clearly, breaking down the sequence step by step. Then Giovanna usually demonstrates with the music — giving an opportunity to mark (run through) the exercise and showcasing correct timing, musical phrasing, and adding layers of detail. As is demonstrated in the video, Giovanna usually offers further cues, in this example, cues relate to correct head alignments and clean placement when facing croisé. This is great preparation for use of épaulement - so all these details really help to elevate the quality of your movements over time :). Clear guidance on the ‘little’ details is something we prioritise in our Technique classes. Artistry isn’t always born from being told to ‘feel the music.’ Sometimes that helps - but sometimes it can mean very little to adult students who are relatively new to ballet and still focusing on all the various parts of the body to coordinate! When teachers offer clear guidance on where to look, or exactly how to angle the body, it can help students to feel less confused and lost. This assuredness about what you are meant to be doing is what makes you more comfortable eventually ‘letting go’ and dancing. This combination of explanation + demonstration with music is what you can expect during centre work in our classes. Going through exercises twice means we have time to focus on the technical breakdown of movements, and then layer musicality and dance quality on top. At the Improver level, we sometimes leave time for each group to repeat exercises a few times each. Progress requires depth over breadth - and lots of practice. So we adopt a moderate pace which allows for more marking, repetition and correcting; aiding muscle memory and progress. (But Giovanna is amazing and somehow ensures you always have a full and well-rounded class experience too)! 🩰 Our Improvers Technique class with Giovanna runs Tuesdays, 6:30 – 8pm @ WAC Arts, Belsize Park. :)

✨ Behind the scenes ✨ Continuing on from our Meet the teacher video yesterday to share some Behind the Scenes footage! This video was taken in our Thursday Intermediate/Advanced class with Giovanna and is a litttle insight into how our Technique classes usually start! Before heading straight into pliés, @gioh_lamboglia often begins class with a short warm-up sequence at the barre. It’s a moment to ease into movement and prepare the body. These mini-exercises might include things like: gentle rolls through the head and shoulders, slow foot shaping and tendus, ankle mobilisation (often in parallel in our beginners class), fondus or slow movements to activate turnout - and finding a calm balance through rises and rolling through the feet. The purpose of a warm-up exercise? To wake up the joints, switch on turnout and alignment, and set posture BEFORE adding the weight and depth of full pliés. This is even more important in adult classes where people may be coming into movement after 8 full hours at a desk! It’s about tuning in, activating the right muscles, and giving your body the chance to feel grounded and ready for class :). Plus it means if you are a little late you might still make it for pliés (that is an unintended benefit though 😂) It’s one of the ways Giovanna makes technique classes not only challenging, but also thoughtful — every detail has a purpose and helps you to feel steady at the barre and confident in the centre. Meet Giovanna 😍 (video by @sharon.yau ) Giovanna is our resident Technique teacher at London Ballet Classes and has been with us since April 2022! At LBC, our Technique classes are designed to give you the time and space to refine the detail of your dancing. They’re all about precision, vocabulary, sequencing and good execution — the building blocks that make ballet secure and expressive. We couldn’t ask for someone better to lead our students through this journey! What makes Giovanna really stand out as a teacher is her eye for detail. She focuses on alignment, coordination and quality of execution — guiding you to dance with precision, while still enjoying the process. You’ll work on strength, endurance and sharp execution in centre and allegro, with interesting, well-crafted sequences that keep you both challenged and inspired. It’s about fine-tuning detail while dancing with freedom. We are so lucky to have had @gioh_lamboglia in our teaching team for over 3 years.
